Hi there Readers!!!
As the sun rises on September 8th, we celebrate something truly powerful—International Literacy Day. This day reminds us of the beauty and importance of literacy, the simple yet profound ability to read and write that connects us, empowers us, and transforms our lives. 📚✨
For me words are always more than ink on a page; they hold the power to shape worlds, inspire minds, and spark change. Today, I am honoring the gift of literacy and the doors it opens to every person, young and old, in every corner of the world.
Why Literacy Matters?
In a world where knowledge is everything, literacy is the foundation. It’s the key to education, self-expression, and personal freedom. 🌍✨ Being able to read gives us access to information, opportunities, and the ability to write our own stories—both literally and figuratively. Yet, millions of people around the world still don’t have access to basic education. International Literacy Day shines a light on this and encourages us all to take steps toward a future where literacy is a right for everyone, not just a privilege.
The Global Impact of Literacy
The ripple effect of literacy can’t be overstated. When communities become literate, entire generations benefit. Education lifts families out of poverty, improves health outcomes, and fosters equality, particularly for women and children. Imagine how a single book in the hands of a child can ignite their curiosity and spark a lifelong love for learning. 📖💡 That’s the kind of magic that literacy brings to the world, and it starts with the simple act of teaching someone to read.
On this International Literacy Day, let's choose books that have the power to change your life in meaningful ways. Whether they shift your perspective, challenge your thinking, or open your mind to entirely new ideas, the right book can make a lasting impact. Below, I’ll share some of the books that deeply influenced my thought process and helped me see the world through a different lens. 📚✨
1. 40 rules of Love
In this lyrical, exuberant follow-up to her 2007 novel, The Bastard of Istanbul, acclaimed Turkish author Elif Shafak unfolds two tantalizing parallel narratives—one contemporary and the other set in the thirteenth century, when Rumi encountered his spiritual mentor, the whirling dervish known as Shams of Tabriz—that together incarnate the poet's timeless message of love.
2 The Alchemist
Paulo Coelho's masterpiece tells the mystical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure. His quest will lead him to riches far different—and far more satisfying—than he ever imagined. Santiago's journey teaches us about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, recognizing opportunity and learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, most importantly, following our dreams.
3. The Book thief
By her brother's graveside, Liesel's life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger's Handbook, left behind there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordian-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor's wife's library, wherever there are books to be found.
But these are dangerous times. When Liesel's foster family hides a Jew in their basement, Liesel's world is both opened up, and closed down.
In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time
4. Howl's Moving Castle
5. The Subtle art of not giving a Fuck
For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F**k positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected American society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.
Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited—"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek.
There are only so many things we can give a f**k about so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real-talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives
Final Thoughts
As the day draws to a close, take a moment to appreciate the power that comes with being able to read these words. It’s something many of us take for granted, but it’s a gift that can transform lives. So, whether you're curling up with a favorite book, donating to a literacy program, or simply reflecting on the role reading has played in your own life, remember this: literacy is the bridge between where we are and where we want to be. Let’s build that bridge for everyone, everywhere. 📖🌿✨
Happy International Literacy Day, and may the power of words continue to shape the world for the better. 🌍🌸
